Five cars collided on the A27 eastbound at Patcham this morning.
Sussex Police said the crash happened at around 7.45am on the A23 slip road.
Ambulance, police and fire crews were called to the scene.
Delays were experienced in the area, eastbound after Patcham, with congestion to the A2038 King George VI Avenue junction.
Delays of up to 15 minutes were expected to impact drivers.
UPDATE at 10.30am: The carriageway has been cleared
