CRICKETERS smashed their target as they ran more than 90 miles nonstop between the wicket posts.

Members of Brighton and Hove Cricket Club spent Bank Holiday Monday sprinting back and forth on Hove seafront near Adelaide Crescent for their event The Big Run.

Originally the club set out to cover 60.1 miles – the distance between Sussex County Cricket Ground to the home of cricket at Lord’s – but they managed to beat their target by more than 30 miles.

The cricketers teamed in pairs as part of small teams to run throughout the day.

Charitable passers-by dropped £475.52 worth of change into the club’s collection buckets.

In total with sponsorship the club managed to raise more than £2,000 to help keep themselves afloat.

Ian Parker, fundraising secretary, said the club wanted to offer a “big thank you” to all the people who donated.

The 42-year-old said: “We ended last season in a little bit of debt with some expenses we could not avoid, also our groundsman retired so we had to go on the market for a new one.

“But we managed to top more than £2,000 for The Big Run and cover more than 90 miles.

“We had lots of youngsters coming along who were brilliant and set a high gear throughout the day.”

He added: “We risked it doing the run on Easter Monday but we could not have asked for better weather.”

Brighton and Hove Cricket Club offers cricket to all ages from under nines to under 16s and fields five mens teams, alongside three girls teams and a womens team.

In total the club has approximately 300 members and is based at Nevill Sports Ground in Eridge Road in Hove.

Mr Parker said: “We never let people’s personal backgrounds get in the way and we we will not turn away anyone who wants to play cricket.”
