OWNERS are desperately needed for eight black cats which were among 25 found living in a cramped bedsit.

The animals have been cared for by Cats Protection at Chelwood Gate near Lewes since they were found in Haywards Heath in January.

A fundraising campaign raised nearly £3,000 to cover the cost of having the animals neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

However although most have been rehomed, eight are still waiting for find a new owner.

Deputy manager Tania Marsh said: “We’re now really keen to get the remaining cats settled.

“They have been through a lot and we would like nothing more than to find them all a new loving home soon.

“We still have four girls and four boys and all are lovely cats.

“They can be a little nervous at first but once they get to know their owners we’re confident they will become wonderful companions.

“Finding homes for black cats is tricky anyway as people tend to prefer other colours.

“So suddenly having to find homes for 25 of them was always going to be a challenge.

“We’re thrilled so many have found a home, but it is very sad to see these eight lovely cats still waiting for the right person to walk through our doors.”

Those still waiting to find a new home are females Hula, Hippy, Heidi and Harmony.

The males in need of a bit of tender, loving care are Harold, Hugo, Hedwig and Hobson, all aged between one and four-years-old.

A further cat Happy and her young kitten Hiccup will be ready for homing in a few weeks when Hiccup is old enough.

The cats were all taken in by the charity after it received a call from the relative of an elderly man who had to leave home due to ill health.
