Travellers have moved into a busy car park.

Police said caravans and trailers arrived in Uckfield on Sunday, setting up at the car park behind the High Street.

Wealden District Council, which owns the land, is considering whether to evict the travellers as shoppers try to find somewhere else to park.

Duncan Bennett, deputy mayor, said: "The district council have to go through a court process to get them removed that costs council tax payers every time.

"Apart from the fact that they are obviously taking up a lot of parking spaces that are at a premium here I haven't heard that there's been any trouble but obviously it's a major inconvenience.

"Let's hope that when they move on and find a more suitable place to go, the area is left in the high standard they found it."

Since the travellers arrived, children have been seen riding trail bikes across Luxford Field and residents have complained of fly-tipping.

Police visited the site with a representative from the council on Monday.

Terry Crone, head of corporate assets at Wealden, said: "We are currently undertaking a number of assessments to help determine what courses of action the council needs to take.

"If appropriate, action under the council's off street parking regulations will be considered to secure the removal of the occupiers from the land."
