TEACHING staff face redundancy with others getting a cut in hours at a secondary school.

At least 16 staff at Patcham High School in Brighton are included in a consultation with three full-time posts being axed and the deputy headteacher will not being replaced after he retires.

The school is making the cuts to trim more than £230,000 from its budget over four years.

The school has proposed chopping two heads of house posts and the job of a technology teacher.

Of the other roles, a part-time legacy specialist could lose one day a week while a reprographics post remains intact but with fewer hours.

The behaviour assistant team could also be cut in hours to save one hour per person per day.

In a consultation document on the restructure, seen by The Argus, it is proposed that the move would create extra roles of assistant heads for year 7, 8 and 9.

One source, who did not want to be named, said staff were angry and blamed the school for poor financial management.

Paula Sargent, headteacher, said: “The school is facing a significant budget issue, and we have set out proposals to address this.

“We are committed to a full process of consultation with our staff and trade unions about these proposals.”

Unions are due to meet with the school tomorrow.

Ahead of the meeting, Alex Knutsen, branch secretary of Unison, said the school was looking at a “worst case scenario” by cutting the money now to cover the next few years.

He said: “That’s a silly way to go. They should cut what they need to now – a week is a long time in politics.”

But he added: “It’s part of a wider problem. Budgets are being cut despite what the coalition says.”

Mr Knutsen said the school has to pay out more in pensions over the coming years as a result of a decision by the Government.

He also blamed the Government for the inflation rate affecting how much schools pay for their supplies. The consultation ends on May 11, with a decision expected by the end of the month.
