Jodie Kidd is on the cusp of signing a deal with the BBC to become the new host of hit motoring show Top Gear.

The former model, from Petworth, is reportedly in advanced talks with the production company to take over at the helm of the show along with Life on Mars star Philip Glenister and motorcycle racer Guy Martin.

The popular show’s future has been in jeopardy ever since presenter Jeremy Clarkson was dropped from the programme following a “fracas” with one of the show’s producers.

Mr Clarkson’s co-presenters Richard Hammond and James May are also believed to be being replaced.

The show’s co-creator Andy Wilman, who has now quit the series, was allegedly overheard describing the new line-up while having lunch with Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay according to a national newspaper.

Ms Kidd, 36, who currently presents The Classic Car Show on Channel 5, was previously spotted meeting with Mr Clarkson outside a London pub.

She previously featured on Top Gear, taking part in one of the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car challenge laps – putting in a time around the show’s test track of one minute and 48 seconds.

Ms Kidd had already revealed she would be happy to take up the job when she was a guest on Saturday Kitchen last month. The Great British Bake Off’s Paul Hollywood gave her his backing, saying: “It would be nice to have a woman.”

He added: “You can't replace those three guys. Change it, don't mimic it.”

Her potential co-star Philip Glenister, best known as DCI Gene Hunt from Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, made his presenting debut last year on For The Love Of Cars on Channel 4.

Guy Martin is best known for competing in road racing in events such as the Isle of Man TT and currently presents Speed With Guy Martin on Channel 5.

background

Top Gear was taken off the air after then-presenter Jeremy Clarkson was suspended from the show following a dispute with a producer. The BBC decided not to renew Mr Clarkson’s contract in March after he punched a producer on set follow a row about the lack of hot food.

His fellow presenters Richard Hammond and James May have confirmed they will not be returning for another series of Top Gear without Clarkson at the helm.

The trio have reportedly had a number of secret meetings, including at Goodwood, as they plan a new TV venture.

They are now embarking on the Top Gear Live tour which has been rebranded as Clarkson, Hammond and May.
