The messages are set to repeat for the next 24 hours in this election – that much is clear from the last 24 hours.

For the Conservatives it has been the same for the last week or so.

That is to drive home a message that the Scottish Nationalist Party will be the real winners and indeed the power behind the throne should Labour’s Ed Miliband enter No 10 Downing Street as prime minister at some point in the next two weeks.

It is a risky message aimed at jittery English voters who might fear the Scots could have undue influence and power over decisions that affect only this country and indeed might even cause us to lose out financially.

Yesterday Kemptown Tory candidate Simon Kirby was at it with a message that might have come straight from his party’s HQ.

We might lose out on our hospital’s much needed revamp if Labour wins, he claimed.

He then went on to suggest that more Westminster money might be diverted to the Scots north of the border.

There are genuine concerns about how devolution works in the UK – questions that have not been answered by anyone in Parliament for decades.

On the other hand the Conservatives must be careful with rhetoric like this.

If the party wins the election it will have to work closely with the SNP.

Too many scare stories risk driving more people north of the border into the arms of the independence lobby.

That is just the result the staunchly unionist Tories do not want.
