Dr Earthey of Saltdean (Letters March 27) is quite right to highlight the need for faster public transport from the outskirts of the city to central locations.

This is why Brighton and Hove City Council is working with partners in East Sussex to build bus lanes along the A259 seafront road from Saltdean to Ovingdean, giving a quicker journey for bus passengers who are currently stuck in commuter-time congestion centered on the crossroads at Rottingdean.

The bus company will then look at connecting the residential areas of Saltdean and Peacehaven with better services to join this faster route.

We are pleased our limited stop rapid transport scheme linking Brighton Station with the King Alfred and Brighton Marina is now well on its way to full Government approval and we have already indicated to the regional transport board that we wish to extend the system further to the east and west within the next ten years.

Unfortunately, our plans for a rapid north-south route linked to a park-and-ride scheme were blocked by all opposition councillors.

This Labour council has been very successful at increasing the use of public transport and reducing the number of car journeys into the city.

As the city grows, we are committed to bringing forward these sustainable transport solutions for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.
