The chances of Brighton and Hove getting the right to build a super-casino received a boost last night after a shock blow to the Government.

Peers rejected controversial plans for a super-casino in Manchester and 16 other large and small casinos across the country by 123 votes to 120.

Both Brighton and Hove and Hastings threw their hats in the ring when the Government announced it was to award licences for the next generation of casinos.

But both lost out to towns and cities across the country when the final list was announced in January.

Last night culture secretary Tessa Jowell said ministers would reflect on the outcome of the vote before returning to the House of Commons with proposals on how they would "take this policy forward".
