A COUPLE have become the world’s oldest newlyweds after marrying at the weekend.

George Kirby tied the knot on his 103rd birthday with Doreen Luckie, 91, on Saturday.

George also became Britain’s oldest ever groom in front of about 50 guests and a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne.

The happy couple, who have a combined age of nearly 195, have been living together for 27 years, residing in the Langham Hotel for the past 18 months.

George’s son, Neil, 63, who owns the hotel with his wife Wendy, said: “I was the one who instigated it – I said to him, ‘It’s about time you met an honest woman’.

“It brings Doreen into our family because she is pretty much on her own. She’s very good to my dad and very patient. We’re going to look after her.”

It was on Valentine’s Day that George said to Doreen, “Will you marry me for a short while” – and plans went from there.

The nonagenarian bride told The Argus: “It was a success and it was nice to see everybody. It couldn’t have been better.

“We did talk about it and thought why bother, but it’s worked out all right.

“I want to thank Neil and Wendy for all they have done for us.

“We are happy here. It’s a nice room on the second floor, so we’re very fortunate.”

George even fell over three days before the event but carried on through.

Doreen added: “He managed quite well despite all that. He’s quite tough for his age.”

This was George’s third marriage while it was second time around for Doreen.
