A DRIVER suffered a heart attack at the wheel and crashed into Hove Railway Station.

The man, in his 60s, was helped by passersby at the scene before paramedics arrived.

He has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in a serious condition.

Firefighters, police and ambulance services were called to the scene at about 12.20pm and left shortly after 1pm.

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We were called just after quarter past midday to reports of a car that had gone into the station wall.

"It appeared someone had collapsed at the wheel, causing the accident.

"We sent three paramedics in cars and two ambulances to the scene.

"People prior to our arrival helped him as well.

"A man went into cardiac arrest at the scene and needed rescuscitating.

"He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital."

Emergency services have just left the scene in Goldstone Villas and roads around the station, from Clarendon Road to Denmark Villas, were closed off.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “We were called to Hove railway station following a report of a vehicle collision at the station entrance.

“BTP officers attended the scene and found a car had collided with the station building.

“Colleagues from Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

“A man, believed to be the driver of the car, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The station remains open at this time.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were called to make sure the building was not unsafe and in case anyone was trapped and needed to be cut out of the car. But this had not happened.
