AN MP has spoken of his determination to “challenge the Government” over education having been appointed to his first bill committee.

Hove MP Peter Kyle has been appointed to the Education Bill committee to scrutinise the legislation currently moving through the house.

The bill proposes tackling “failing and coasting” schools by forcing institutions deemed by Ofsted to be “requiring improvement” to accept new headteachers unless they can demonstrate a plan for rapid improvement.

The Labour MP said: “It’s great that the first bill committee I’ve been appointed to since becoming an MP is the Education Bill because it is an issue I care so much about.

“Nobody wants to challenge under-performance in our education system more than I do, but there is a lot in this bill that worries me and I will use this as an opportunity to challenge the government where I see dangers and be a constructive partner wherever possible.”
