A horse was spotted trotting north up the southbound carriageway of the A23 this morning (Monday).
The animal was spotted between Pyecombe and Hickstead shortly before 6.30am.
Reports suggest motorists heading into Brighton were momentarily delayed by the loose nag.
It left the road safely.

Just saw an escaped horse cause a traffic standstill on the A23 motorway. Then it casually trotted by.

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: "At 6.28am on Monday we received a report of a horse running loose through the centre of Hurstpierpoint.
"It was then said to be running south along the southbound carriageway of the A23, but was found safe about 20 minutes in nearby Langton Lane.
"Enquiries will be made to trace the owners.
"Officers slowed down southbound traffic on the A23 for short while as the search for the horse was carried out, but traffic was not stopped."
