A teenager told police he was shocked when two friends suddenly attacked an alcoholic, a court was told.

Oliver McNulty was arrested soon after street drinker Matthew Heading died from his injuries. He denied taking part in the attack but said Joe Budgen and Adam Todd had given Mr Heading "a cheeky little kick".

McNulty described how Todd had also punched the victim's friend Joe Burton in the face seconds earlier.

The attack allegedly took place outside Glenwood Lodge hostel, in Grand Parade, Brighton, on June 21 last year.

McNulty said he was at Budgen's home when Cherise Budgen phoned her brother.

Miss Budgen, who was heavily pregnant, had earlier told Hove Crown Court she felt threatened after an argument with two homeless men in a mobile phone shop.

McNulty said he followed Budgen to the shop in London Road and saw him speak to his sister. Budgen walked off towards St Peter's Church and he followed.

They bumped into Todd and his girlfriend and McNulty said he followed as they walked towards Glenwood Lodge.

McNulty told police: "Adam punched the geezer with the blue jumper first. Joe came and hit the other one, who tried to run away. Joe kicked him in the back and he fell over. Joe started stamping on him.

"It was horrible. I think Adam gave him a cheeky little kick and they walked off."

Todd, 25, of Ropetackle Walk, Shoreham, Budgen, 19, of Ann Street, Brighton, McNulty, 18, of New England Street, Brighton, Martin Keeting, 28, of Taunton Road, Brighton, and Paul Hamlet, 32, of Falcon Court, Whitehawk, Brighton, deny murder. They also deny causing actual bodily harm to Mr Burton. The trial continues.
