A 20-year-old driver has died on a diversion from the A27.

The young driver died at the scene after his car was involved in a head-on collision while driving along the A280 Long Furlong just after 6.30pm last night.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 34-year-old man from Worthing, was taken to Worthing Hospital with minor injuries.

Motorists are currently being encouraged to use the A280 as the main diversion route for traffic travelling to and from the west of Worthing after the closure of the A27 at Shoreham following Saturday’s tragic airshow crash.

Sussex Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash involving a silver Vauxhall Vectra and a blue Ford Fiesta.

The road was closed for around five hours while officers were on the scene and police have thanked motorists for their patience.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to it.

"Witnesses are asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Dovedale."
