A diver who discovered a shipwreck hopes to open a maritime museum and sealife centre.

Paul Stratford, 41, of The Piazza in Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne, is working on transforming the neglected Martello Tower number 66 at Langney Point into a Maritime Heritage Centre.

Mr Stratford wants the centre to be a base from which people can explore local shipwrecks and study marine life using underwater cameras.

He said: "I'd be very keen to show the public, especially those who don't dive, what is under the sea.

"There is a lot of maritime history in this area which is not being explored."

Mr Stratford found a shipwreck in 2005 half a mile offshore from Normans Bay.

The identity of the protected wreck site is unknown and it could be the remains of either the 70-gun English warship HMS Resolution lost in the Great Storm in 1703 or an allied Dutch warship lost during the Battle of Beachy Head in 1690.

The project has the support of the Sovereign Harbour Residents' Association and Eastbourne councillors.
