VOLKSWAGEN enthusiasts are calling for donations as they collect supplies for those caught up in the refugee crisis.

A convoy of classic Volkswagen cars and campervans will then drive the items to Portsmouth campaign group, Don’t hate, Donate!, for delivery to the most vulnerable refugees in Europe.

Kevin Stephenson, from the Sussex-based Dirty Low Down Dubbers Volkswagen Club, said they were motivated to act after seeing “horrific images in the newspapers and on the television, particularly of children".

She said: “The idea came from a discussion between members who felt we as a club wanted to do something to help but keeping in the spirit of a fun and cool Volkswagen club.”

They have already started making collections in their classic cars and vans from homes in Bognor and Brighton.

Mr Stephenson said: “The numbers of collections are increasing but we have room for plenty more.”

Items such as camping equipment, tarpaulins and bedding are being sought. People are also asked to donate bottled water, non-perishable food, toiletries and sanitary products as well as clothes, children’s toys and games.

Mobile phones, chargers and batteries would also be welcome as well as anything else people think might be useful.

Don’t hate, Donate! is a Portsmouth based campaign group set up recently in response to the refugee crisis.

Yaz Atia, of Don’t hate, Donate!, said they have had donations coming in nationwide.

He said: “It’s all off our own backs at the moment. It’s just from the people to the people.”

They have organised a two tonne lorry and trailer and will be driving the goods over to Calais and Greece. Members of the Dirty Low Down Dubbers Volkswagen Club may also travel with them in convoy.

Mr Stephenson said: “The refugee problem is not going away any time soon. We know that the people of Sussex are generous and kind spirited. We also know that the recipients of much needed goods are in most cases proud people who have not asked for help but desperately need it.”
