A VIDEO of a near miss on the A23 has prompted calls for changes to a junction at Pyecombe.

Footage from a dashboard camera captures the accident which nearly occurred after a car pulled out of the wrong exit of the Texaco garage and straight into the fast lane.

It caused another driver to swerve onto the central reservation.

The video, captured on the evening of October 28, has been viewed more than 17,000 times on social media and prompted calls for change to avoid the dangers.

Henry Page said: “That junction is awful. It must be redesigned to allow traffic to filter in moving in the same direction.

Another said: “Seen that happen a load of times very early in the morning. They come out of there so fast they can’t turn.”

The driver who crashed, listed as Tink Barbarossa on Facebook, said: “I am appealing to any witnesses. [The incident] almost cost us our lives. I was travelling at 70mph and headed for the central reservation to avoid a fatal collision. The driver drove off. I have contacted the police who are investigating the collision and who are trying to catch the perpetrator.

“Another driver who stopped to ensure we were okay happened to have a car cam, and has kindly forwarded me the footage. A car can be seen passing shortly after the collision. Was this you? Any help would be gratefully appreciated, as the driver needs to be prosecuted. I need the registration number of vehicle. Thank you in advance.”

Police are investigating the incident and said the Surrey woman driver and her three passengers escaped unhurt but their car was damaged.

The red car involved, possibly a Peugeot, did not stop.

A police spokeswoman said: “She was forced to take evasive action, mounting the central reservation, after a red car emerged from a side turning directly into the outside lane of the dual carriageway.”

Anyone who saw the incident should call 101 quoting serial 845 of October 29.
