GREEN politicians have taken the battle to protect local government funding to Downing Street.

Brighton and Hove City Councillor Dick Page and Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas joined party colleagues in delivering a letter to Prime Minster David Cameron challenging local government funding cuts.

The letter urged Mr Cameron to plug the estimated £9.5 billion funding gap faced by councils across the country between now and 2020 which are expected to be confirmed in the Comprehensive Spending Review this week.

Green councillors have accused their Labour counterparts of "waving a white flag" rather than challenging the scale of central government cuts.

Ms Lucas said: “Enough is enough. The Government must rethink its callous and counterproductive austerity programme and give local authorities the resources they need to deliver services to the people they work for.”

Cllr Page said: "Before the spending review we call on progressive Labour members to stand up with us against this government's vicious and unnecessary austerity policies.”
