Now Brighton and Hove is to be run by a significantly "greener" council, maybe we can see some real action to turn ourselves a better shade of green across the whole city.

San Francisco recently announced a ban on the use of plastic bags by supermarkets. Why not follow suit? A suitably sponsored, funky, reusable cloth bag issued and sold by Brighton and Hove City Council could soon become a desirable, must-have item.

Or we could introduce "plastax"

bags as they have in Ireland, which is thought to have reduced the use of plastic bags by 90 per cent.

We are not currently able in our doorstep collection to recycle plastic packaging, tin foil, tetra packs, plastic bags, rags or garden waste - but why not?

Magpie could do it when I previously used their service (I still would, but they don't serve my area any more).

And what about offering cheap deals on wormeries so we can all recycle our food waste at home?

Just a few ideas which might be a more popular use of our money than more festivals or consultancy, I would suggest.
