Have you ever had the feeling you just don't get it?
Sitting in my comfy chair upstairs at Komedia, that uncomfortable sensation hit me every time the crowd around me erupted with laughter at obvious and long-winded gags which left me stony-faced.
Count Arthur Strong, the aged and self-deluded one-time variety star, is a good character in theory and a convincing one in practise, but the comedy he generates is as light as the entertainment the show is sending up.
The reams of critical accolades heaped on this successful Edinburgh Fringe and BBC Radio 4 act praise the Count's pathetic, befuddled, parochial charm, but this seems weak and dated when compared to something such as the darker, more painfully brilliant Marion and Jeff.
An insufferably repetitive and over-cooked show in my opinion - a side-splitting display of genius according to everyone else.
