A man arrested in connection with the Brighton hit and run has been released on police bail.

The 31-year-old from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle dangerously, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop at the scene of an road accident, driving without a licence or insurance and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He has been bailed until April 3 while investigations continue.

Father of three Andy Payne, 53, is recovering at home after being flung into the air by a Fiat 500 which smashed into him as he crossed a road.

Shocking footage of the hit-and-run in Montague Place in the Kemp Town area of Brighton has been viewed more than a million times.

At the family home in Hove, Mr Payne's wife Lisa spoke briefly and said: "He's getting better slowly. He's not too bad."

She declined to comment further as police question a man arrested on Tuesday night over the crash which happened at 3.40pm on January 14.

The 31-year-old man from Brighton was detained last night after trying to hide on a roof in Donald Hall Road.

He was held on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious injury, attempting to pervert the course of justice and aggravated vehicle taking.

A 56-year-old woman, also from Brighton, was arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

She has been bailed by police until April 3.

In the footage, a witness can be seen holding their hand to their mouth in shock at the impact.

Mr Payne is seen sprawled motionless in the middle of the road as passers-by stand around in disbelief.

A £1,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible.

Sussex Police is still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A Crimestoppers spokesman said: “This video is obviously incredibly disturbing and the driver of the vehicle must be held accountable.

"If anyone has information on who is responsible, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on0800 555 111 and could be entitled to a reward of up to £1,000 if it leads to an arrest and charge.”
