COULD this be the cheapest house in Sussex?

On average, a one bed flat in Brighton and Hove would cost you £220,000, but you can pick up this beauty for offers in the region of £35,000.

Designed by multi award winning Carl Turner Architects, the nifty home was originally constructed as part of the New House for London project and showcased at The London Design Festival.

The prototype house, now dismantled and being held in storage in Lewes and Arundel, is made from two shipping containers, steel and timber.

One container is designed as a bedroom space and the other is a kitchen and living area.

Across the top of the two containers the property boasts a terrace with space for a vegetable patch and built-in seating.

There are planters around the outside of the container suitable for growing fruits, vegetables or flowers.

It currently belongs to director of Find a Build James Oliver who picked it up from the exhibition last year.

He said: “The initial plan was to use it as a site office for a development site we were working on because we’re a local property acquisitions agency, but plans have changed, it became surplus to requirement and we decided to sell it.”

Although on the market as a stand-alone house, the property is more likely to be sold as an outhouse or an addition to an existing home and agents Oakley has already seen interest.

Director James Epps said: “It’s not our usual sale, but it’s someone we’ve worked with in the past.

“We’ve had quite a bit of interest already, so people are definitely keen on the property.

“I can see it being popular as an outhouse in someone’s garden maybe or it being converted into an office or a games room or something like that.

“That’s where the market will probably be.”

The London exhibition was set out to come up with ideas to combat the housing crisis in the capital, a problem Mr Oliver, whose office for findabuild.co.uk is in North Laine, says is migrating south to Sussex.

He added: “We had one eye on affordable housing and looking at prices, it’s quite extraordinary.

“A six-bedroomed house in the Hove Park area costs the same price as a one-bedroomed flat in London with quite bit of change.

“And the most shocking thing is that Brighton and Hove is closing the gap.”
