A VILLAGE charity fun run with competitors carrying beer has celebrated its 60th birthday.

The 1.5 mile Tommy Trot (correct), where joggers and walkers carry a half pint jug of beer across the finish line, brought the picturesque village of Isfield, north of Lewes, to a standstill and raised a fantastic £346 for Friends of Sussex Hospices (FSH).

The event was organised by the Laughing Fish pub landlord Andy Brooks and the proud winner of the race was Declan Emerson.

Children were also catered for with the Lemonade Race. Sam Howard won the Over-10 category and William Gimm (correct) took top honours in the Under-10 group.

The fun event was started back in 1956 by former pub landlord Tommy Thompson. Although he ran the pub for less than a year, his memory lives on.

FSH chairwoman Kathy Gore, who attended the fun run, said: “It was a real community day, with a great focus on the children as well as the all-important Tommy Trot. FSH is so very grateful to the pub and the whole Isfield community for their wonderful support.”
