Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was hit by a lorry after a fight.

The 23-year-old man from Brighton was found lying in Western Road near the junction of Temple Street at 2.40am this morning. Emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 27-year-old man from Hove has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in custody. The driver of a Tesco lorry is being treated as a witness, police said.

Western Road from Montpelier Road to Norfolk Square is currently closed in both directions while investigations are being carried out.

Reporter Adrian Imms is on the scene and said a forensics team is working around the base of the lorry at present. The police cordon has been extended in the last 20 minutes.

Brighton and Hove Buses westbound services are being diverted via Montpelier Road, Seven Dials, Davigdor Road and Holland Road before resuming the normal route.

The Argus:

Detective chief inspector Tanya Jones, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "This has been a fast moving investigation and we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

"However we are still appealing for witnesses who may have seen the fight which spilled into Western Road and then the victim being hit by a lorry. If you have any information about this incident please contact us."

The death followed another fight nearby just hours. Police do not believe the two incidents were linked.
