THERESA MAY'S new Transport Secretary has been urged to waste no time in sorting out the rail problems in Sussex.

Chris Grayling MP was given the role yesterday as the new Prime Minister continued to shape her Cabinet on another eventful 24 hours in Westminster.

He replaces Patrick McLoughlin who was made the Conservative Party chairman.

Within minutes of Grayling being appointed, MPs from across the south east issued pleas with him to do what his predecessor could not and sort out the shambolic service run by Govia Thameslink (GTR) which operates Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express.

Among those to contact him was Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes, who tweeted that she was looking forward to working with him.

Her Tory colleague Chris Philp, Croydon South MP, said that he sent him a text message just one minute after hearing of his appointment to request an urgent meeting over the problems.

There was no news last night as to whether under-fire Rail Minister Claire Perry had kept her job.

It comes as she has placed increased blame on the rail operator over recent days having previously told The Argus they were the best in the business.

Meanwhile Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd, who was named Home Secretary on Wednesday evening, got straight to work yesterday as she joined Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe for a walkabout and meeting in London.

Among the other notable Cabinet appointments yesterday included Greg Clark who was made Business Secretary, Sajid Javid, who will head the Department for Communities and Local Government and Justine Greening who head of the Department for Education.

A number of big names were sacked by May yesterday including Michael Gove, Oliver Letwin, Nicky Morgan and John Whittingdale.

However, controversial Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt kept his job.

Another surprise announcement yesterday was May's leadership rival and Brexiteer Andrea Leadsom, who was made Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The appointment angered key Remain campaigner Sir Nicholas Soames MP.

The Mid Sussex MP, tweeted: "Wonderful symmetry of La Leadsom going to DEFRA and having to tell Farmers the games up as a result of Brexit #poeticjustice."

Elsewhere Liz Truss was made Justice Secretary, Liam Fox Secretary of State for International Trade, Karen Bradley Culture Secretary, Priti Patel International Development Secretary while Damian Green will take over at Work and Pensions.
