A SPECTACULAR fireworks display and lights show will be held on Thursday for the official opening of the i360.

Attraction bosses have promised a night to remember with the15 minute display kicking off at 10pm.

The tower's lighting will give the impression that the structure is breathing.

With just three days to go until the opening, David Marks, from Marks Barfield Architects who designed the i360, explained: “The concept for the lighting at the top of the tower is that it breathes, gently brightening and fading at the average rate of a human breathing at rest.”

The lighting is concentrated at the top of the tower, fading as it descends to the level of other buildings.

Four white lights will shine from the top down, accentuating the vertical slots in the tower’s cladding. Twenty four coloured LED lights sit between the steel structure and its cladding, providing a subtle glow.

Tickets for the opening are available for £5 from those who wish to enjoy it from the attraction's boarding deck overlooking the beach.

However, the display will be visible for free from elsewhere on the seafront.

The tower lights can be programmed to display a range of colours and patterns to support important city and global events, from festivals and launches to memorials and charity days.

David Marks added: “The lighting is designed to be flexible so that colours and effects can change to reflect events and moments that are important to local people.”

The first will be Brighton Pride, when the attraction will be lit in slowly revolving rainbow colours to celebrate the occasion.

For the occasion, i360 bosses have brought in the same lighting specialists commissioned by Brighton and Hove City Council to illuminate the underside of the brick arches supporting the London Road Viaduct.

The fireworks display will by put on by Frontier Fireworks, who performed the display that launched Brighton Fringe earlier this year.

When not re-coloured for a special event, the standard lighting colour scheme on the tower and viewing pod will emulate British Airways colours of red, white and blue.

Lynne Embleton, from British Airways, said, “The tower will be a beacon for the city, and it will be fantastic to see it lit with the British Airways colours.”
