A TEACHER has been convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl.

Subir Chakravarty was an IT teacher at Ratton School in Eastbourne when he attacked the girl in 2014.

The 38-year-old, now unemployed and of Kenneth Road, Chadwell Heath, Essex, is due to be sentenced next month.

Huxley Knox-Macaulay, headteacher at Ratton School, said: “These are appalling crimes and we were shocked when the allegations first emerged.

“We are pleased this abuse came to light, and commend the victim for having the bravery to speak out.

"However, even though it will do little to help the victim as she comes to terms with the abuse she suffered, we are also pleased that he has been held to account for his crimes.”

He said Chakravarty left the school before it was made aware of what happened.

An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: “We utterly condemn the actions of this teacher.

“We expect extremely high standards of all employees, especially teachers responsible for the education, welfare and development of our young people.

“All schools have to have robust child protection procedures in place which meet the standards required by Ofsted and by the East Sussex Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB). We are satisfied the school followed the correct procedures in this case."

Chakravarty was convicted in July 26 following a trial.

The offence took place in Eastbourne, on March 28, 2014.

He had been on bail during the trial but has been remanded in custody ahead of the sentencing.
