AN 85-year-old man was knocked down by a car on a busy one-way system this morning.

The man was hit by a green Peugeot 307 at the junction of North Way and South Way, at the western end of Newhaven's one-way system just after 7am.

Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

The victim was seriously injured and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he is now in a stable condition. The car driver was unhurt.

Queues built up in the area as a result of the accident causing tailbacks on the A259 Coast Road.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The incident caused significant tailbacks and police wish to thank drivers for their patience and understanding while emergency services were busy at the scene.

"A 30-year-old man from Seaford was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving has been bailed until Thursday, November 24, pending further enquiries."
