A SNOWDOG has been removed from the city art trail to raise money for charity after it was damaged.

Sparky, the giant pooch on display in Preston Park, has been taken away for repair about a large chip in its paintwork was discovered.

The Martlets hospice, which is organising the trail with company Wild in Art to fundraise, said he will return next week after a "trip to the vets."

They've also received reports to damage to Horatio - The Bathing Beauty who stands 1.5 metres tall in East Street.

He is being checked over and repaired.

Warren Morgan, Brighton and Hove City Council leader, noticed the damage and said it "looked like someone had hit its back legs with a vehicle or trolley accidentally."

He said: "I've asked our Cityclean staff to keep an eye on the Snowdogs while they are out and about; we should all do our bit to take care of them so they raise as much money as possible for the Martlets."

Sarah Harvey, Martlets project manager, said: "Our Snowdogs by the Sea campaign has been embraced by the people of Brighton and visitors alike, thousands of people have visited our Snowdogs in the first two weeks of the trail. We’ve been overwhelmed by its popularity, and by the generosity of trail goers who have donated to Martlets.

"Sadly we also have to report there has been damage to the our Snowdogs, these beautiful sculptures are not suitable for climbing for on. "We want them to be in pristine condition for everyone to enjoy but if you do see any damage call us to report it on our damage hotline 0808 1641810."
