A TEAM from a building company has been crowned the overall winner of the charity rally to Monte Carlo.

Stuart Campbell, Chandlers Building Supplies in Lewes branch manager and Chandlers Timber trading director Trevor Mudd drove across Europe for four days in an old banger to raise money for charity in the Vado Rally 2016.

They took on the 1,300-mile challenge from Dover to Monte Carlo in an old Mercedes C250.

The rules state that the car should not cost more than £500 and more effort must be put in dressing the car and crew rather than making sure the engine works.

The pair stuck by the rules and purchased the car for a measly £147.

The route took the team through eight European countries before arriving in Monte Carlo in three days.

The company raised more than £1,500 for The Rainy Day Trust and beat 36 other teams to win first prize.

To fit in with the rules, Stuart and Trevor completed challenges along the way and ensured they and their car were dressed and decorated in a different theme each day.

These included The Lone Ranger and Tonto, a nod to Eddie the Eagle, the Fearless Frauleins to celebrate Oktoberfest and The Blues Brothers Do Christmas.

To add to their points and fundraising total, Trevor also completed a 220 metre bungee jump off the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland whilst dressed as a Fearless Fraulein.

Stuart and Trevor’s efforts saw them take home the winner’s trophy, scoring double the points achieved by the team in second place.

Stuart said: "The Rainy Day Trust is such a worthwhile cause and we enjoyed taking part in the Vado Rally 2016 to support it.

"Each team got thoroughly into the spirit of the challenge and there were some fantastic outfits and themes from everyone.

"We’d like to say a big thank you to the customers, suppliers, friends, family members and colleagues who donated and helped us to raise such a fantastic total."

The Rainy Day Trust provides support and financial grants to people who have worked in the UK’s home improvement industries when times are tough.
