AN investigation has been launched into a fire at County Hall in Lewes.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to St Anne's Crescent, Lewes, at around 6.44am.

Crews from Lewes, Barcombe, Roedean, Hove, Newhaven and Uckfield, a command unit from Bexhill, an aerial ladder platform and an incident command team were sent to the scene.

Firefighters tackled a blaze on the second floor of the building. A full evacuation of the building took place.

No injuries have been reported and parts of the building are now re-opened and back in operation.

At this stage the cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.

Four crews damped down at the scene for an hour and a half after a stop call was made to the fire control room.

East Sussex County Council's chief executive Becky Shaw said: “We are extremely grateful to the ESFRS for their prompt attendance and pleased there were no injuries.

“The fire has affected only one section of the building and parts of County Hall are open for business as usual.

“We do not expect any serious disruption to our services.”
