TWO charities which support families of children with life-shortening conditions have worked together for the first time this festive season.

A total of 150 children and their families from across Sussex attended a Christmas party organised by the two organisations - Chestnut Tree children’s hospice and Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

The party was held at the Kings Centre in Eastbourne and families were treated to a magical winter wonderland.

This was the first time Chestnut Tree has held a Christmas party for children and families in East Sussex and also the first time it has worked with Demelza in this way, although they have worked closely together with individual families for many years.

Rebekah Denny, East Sussex Community Nurse Team Leader for Chestnut Tree, said: "Both charities care for children with life-shortening conditions and their families in East Sussex so it makes sense for us to combine forces to create a magical Christmas event.

"The feedback we have had has been great. By working together we have been able to spread some Christmas cheer to more of our families and everyone had a brilliant afternoon of fun and entertainment."

Toni Finnimore, community services manager from Demelza, said: "Many of our families use both Demelza and Chestnut Tree so it was lovely to enjoy the Christmas festivities together.

"We have a lot of people to thank for helping make this happen. We had some wonderful volunteers who helped set up and run the event."

There was entertainment from Zoe Pennington Dance Studios, magician Magic Martin and Christmas carols from Zoe Harris and friends.

There was also facepainting, a fun photobooth and a special appearance from a trio of storm troopers, plus a visit from Santa Claus.
