A sink hole has opened up in a town's road.
Sussex Police has reported that a sink hole has appeared in College Lane, East Grinstead near to the Mcindoe memorial yesterday evening.
The highway has been closed between the junction of De La Warr Road and the High Street.
West Sussex County Council highways team sent their emeregncy team out to the incident and South East Water took over management of the incident after running water was spotted at the base of the hole.
Eyewitnesses on social media said they saw a car drive right over the two metre wide hole.
Sussex Police has advised that the section of road is likely to be closed for a significant amount of time and motorists have been requested to use alternative routes.
Steve Andrews , South East Water’s head of service management, said: “We were alerted yesterday evening to a burst water main on College Lane and got to site as quickly as possible.
"Our contractor completed repairs to the damaged main at 1.30am, so customers could wake up to normal water supplies.
“We are back on site this morning to assess the damage to the road in daylight and carry out all the necessary repairs.
"For the safety of the public and our workforce, the road will remain closed, but we are working as quickly as possible to get it reopened.
“We’d like to thank motorists for their patience."
