VOLUNTEERS can now register for this year’s Brighton Marathon Weekend with a variety of roles available.

Last year’s event was supported by about 1,500 volunteers who helped with marshalling and other duties.

Race director Tom Naylor said: “Every year we are truly humbled by the amount of time and energy our volunteers are prepared to give to help make the Brighton Marathon Weekend happen.

“We couldn’t do it without them. We look forward to welcoming back our regular volunteers and to introducing new volunteers to the team.”

A wide variety of volunteer roles are available for the April 7-9 weekend, including marshalling at the start of the marathon, co- ordinating the BM10k run and welcoming runners across the finish line.

Volunteers will also have roles along the marathon courses, at the Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens Mini Mile Races on the Saturday and at the exhibition or as part of the medical team.

A briefing evening will be held nearer the time for volunteers who will be provided with a Brighton Marathon Weekend volunteer briefing manual.

Volunteer Lucy Dagg, who manages the Brighton and Hove Women’s Running Club water station, said: “This will be my seventh year of volunteering on our water station.

“Our club has managed this since the first Brighton Marathon and we are really proud of it.

“The atmosphere is amazing and we really feel by being at mile 24 of the marathon that we can make a difference to the runners with enthusiastic words of encouragement, water and not forgetting the Jelly Babies and fruit.

“If people are struggling, we have also been known to run with them to the end.

“It’s very rewarding and the team are always very keen to return each year.”

The marathon is one of the UK’s best running events and one of the city’s most successful fundraising occasions, benefitting hundreds of charities.

This year, more than 18,000 participants are expected across the weekend.

Brighton Marathon Weekend’s partner American Express is continuing its support this year.
