Fifty residents have been evacuated after a flat fire in Brighton City Centre.

Firefighters were called to Princes House in North Street, Brighton, at 5.14am this morning, after reports of a fire in a flat on the third floor.

Three fire engines attended the scene and police blocked off North Street to assist.

Resident Xin Yan called the experience scary.

The 25-year-old postgraduate student said: "When I woke up someone was knocking on my door and the fire alarms kept blaring. It was so scary.

"Everybody came out the building. It was so freezing and we were standing outside in our pyjamas at 5am.

"It took one and a half hours to get back in."

East Sussex Fire and Rescue said all of the residents of Princes House were accounted for.

North Street has now reopened.
