BRIGHTON and Hove has been named as one of the most congested cities in the country.

A study by TomTom put it in fifth place, with only Belfast, Edinburgh, London and Manchester worse off.

Brighton and Hove has had problems with congestion for many years due to the number of visitors, population density and its comparatively small size.

The study also found that drivers in the UK’s biggest towns and cities spend an average of five days stuck in traffic each year.

The UK was the second most congested country in the world behind China.

The global study of 390 cities in 48 countries found Mexico City was the most congested, followed by Bangkok and Jakarta.

Making up the rest of the UK top ten were Bournemouth, Sheffield, Hull, Bristol and Newcastle.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Transport said: “We are making the most extensive improvements to roads since the 1970s, investing a record £23 billion to keep our country moving.

“We are also spending a further £1.3 billion over the next Parliament.

“This is to relieve congestion and provide upgrades to ensure our roads are fit for the future.”
