A DISUSED nursing home has been damaged by a major fire.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the blaze at the former Ridgewood Manor, on Lewes Road, Uckfield.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received 30 emergency calls to their control room to alert them to the blaze at around 8.20pm on Wednesday.

Eight fire engines and around 40 firefighters were at the scene at the height of the fire.

Officials asked members of the public keep their windows and doors closed as the blaze was causing a large amount of smoke.

Sussex Police officers closed the Lewes Road around the scene while the fire was being tackled.

Yesterday morning one fire engine remained at the scene with crews damping down any hotspots.

A fire service spokeswoman said there were no reports of casualties and the cause is not known at this stage.
