TWO University of Brighton students are among just 26 in the UK to receive bursaries of up to £4,000.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology has launched a new Engineering Horizons Bursary scheme for students on an IET-accredited engineering or technology course.

Winners receive at least £1,000 per academic year and mentoring and work experience placements through the IET’s networks.

Bradley Roberts, studying for his degree in electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Brighton, is delighted.

He said: “The bursary will help me buy software and books for my course.

“Plus to have the resources of IET behind me will give me greater confidence to achieve more.”

His ambition is to gain his degree and then progress at Spellman High Voltage, a high voltage power supply manufacturer.

The second student, Jason Gater, is studying for his Masters in electrical and electronic engineering.

He received an IET bursary supported by the Manly Trust, which aims to advance the science of engineering.

He said the bursary will help him achieve his goal of becoming a chartered engineer in the power generation industry.

He said: “The course I am completing covers a wide range of both electrical and electronic areas.

“This will be great to gain knowledge in various different areas and I am very much looking forward to completing my final year project.”

Jason said he was first attracted to engineering when he took on a work experience job at the age of 14.

He now intends volunteering to spread the word among electricians and apprentices about what the IET is and does.

The University of Brighton offers a number of degree courses in what is a very specialised field.
