A 70-year-old man has died after crashing through a school fence into  two parked cars.

Police were called at 12.43 this afternoon after reports of a crash at Hove Park School's Valley Campus in Hangleton Way, Hove.

A Kia Rio saloon, driven by a 70-year-old man, left the road in Hangleton Way and crashed through the school fence. The car then collided into two unattended cars, a Vauxhall Corsa and Seat Ibiza, parked in the school's car park.

The man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene an hour later.

The sole passenger, a 13-year-old boy, was shocked but unhurt.

It is believed the boy was being picked by his grandfather from the school which had closed at 12.35pm for the Easter holidays.

Sussex Police said the cause of death and the reason the car left the road has not been established.

The Coroner's Officer has been informed.

Police are asking witnesses to contact Sussex Police at collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Pablo.

They can also report online to www.sussex.police.uk/contact-us/response-to-appeal/ or call 101.

According to witnesses the car flipped over a fence and landed on parked cars in the schools's car park.

One eyewitness said: "I heard a car screech and it came around the corner. It seemed like the brakes were not working.

"The car flew across the fence and into the school's car park.

"It was like a film, but scary. I hope the person is ok."

Cllr Dawn Barnett, ward councillor of Hangleton and Knoll, said: “It is a great shame that this has happened and my sympathies go with the family of this man, it is very sad.

“We are very lucky it was not even worse and no children were hurt.

“When I first heard about a crash at the school, thinking about them coming out early for the start of Easter holidays, I feared the worst.”

The crash happened at the school's campus where students Year 7 to Year 9 attend.

Hove Park School headteacher Jim Roberts said his thoughts were with those affected by the accident.

He said: "At approximately 12:35pm this afternoon, there was a road traffic accident at our Valley Campus, Hangleton Way.

"A car left the road and has gone through the school fence.

"One person has received medical attention at the scene.

"The thoughts of our school community are with those people affected by this terrible accident."

The school's prize-giving which was meant to take place this evening has been postponed.
