POET and Albion stalwart John Baine – aka Attila the Stockbroker – is back with a new book.

Titled Undaunted, the book brings together his experiences of the past two years and features all his usual wit and humour.

However, the 59-year-old covers a number of dark themes and serious world events.

It features poems based on his diagnosis of bladder cancer, Brexit and Donald Trump becoming president of the United States.

Attila, from Southwick, said his poem In Training was one that he was most proud of.

But he was also very pleased with others including Undaunted and The Sack.

The book also includes poems such as The Last Trump, Rock N Roll Brexit and Theresa the Appeaser, which he said take on the political shifts of recent times.

He said: “There is a lot going on in the world at the moment, but I’m not sitting back.

“I want my poetry to have an impact on people, to say that we can overcome all this stuff that is currently going on in the world.”

The poet has gigged all the over the UK for the past 35 years, and typically does more than 120 concerts a year.

He has also travelled the world performing, taking in Canada six times, USA four times, and Australia four times.

His slogan “most people ignore poetry because most poetry ignores most people”, taken from poet Adrian Mitchell, is a mantra he holds in high regard.

He said his latest collection of poems looks to tap into that ethos.

He said: “The circumstances I write about have changed in the last two years with Brexit and Trump and my diagnosis but I have written this book in a funny, humorous and also angry way.”

As well as being a poet, Attila is well known by Albion fans. He played a key part in saving the club during its troubled years and helped with the move to Falmer.

For people who haven’t experienced an energetic and enjoyable Attila the Stockbroker gig, the 59-year-old said: “My aim is to write poetry for people that don’t necessarily like poetry.

“And I don’t read poetry I perform it. My shows are always a performance.”

The book will be launched at the Komedia in Gardner Street, Brighton, on April 20.

Attila will be performing all the poems from the book and special guest JC Carroll from the band The Members will also perform.

Doors open at 7.30pm, with the event starting at 8pm. Tickets are £8.80. For more details and to buy your ticket visit komedia.co.uk.
