TWO Scouts have been chosen to travel to Iceland to represent the UK at the 15th World Scout Moot.

It is a gathering of Scouts aged 18 to 25 from across the globe who together will embark on nine days of “adventure, fun and discovery”.

Tim Thorley, 24, from Hove and Amy Widgery, 20 from Barcombe Cross, near Lewes, will head to Iceland on behalf of their local Scout groups from July 25 to August 2.

The UK contingent will be taking more than 500 Scouts to the event where some 5,000 participants from 80 countries will come together.

Tim said: “I am so looking forward to visiting Iceland.

“This is a country on my wish list.

“I am looking forward to meeting up with old friends and also meeting Scouts from loads of different countries.

“I went to the last event which was in Canada where I had an amazing experience and where I learnt so many life skills.”

The theme of this year’s gathering is change and all members of the UK contingent will embrace change on their journey, whether this is focused on their own lives or their community.

They will stay at the National Scout Centre on the scenic banks of Lake Ulfljotsvatn.

Tim and Amy will make new friends from across the world and visit Geysir hot springs and the waterfalls of Gullfoss, as well as other some of the country’s othernatural wonders.

Amy said: “I always find it a challenge meeting new people and this event will put me out of my comfort zone.

“But I want to do this and push myself out of where I am comfortable.

“I hope to pass on all the new skills I learn at the event to other Scouts when I am back home.”

Chief Scout Bear Grylls has wished all those taking part in the event well.

He hopes they will continue to pass on what they learn in Iceland.

Mr Grylls said: “I’d just like to say a massive good luck to our brilliant UK contingent.

“They are heading off to the 15th World Scout Moot in Iceland and I am sure it’s going to be a trip to remember.

“I have filmed many times in Iceland and it is an incredible place to adventure and develop new skills that you can use throughout the rest of your life.

“It’s also a place that tests what you are made of.”
