A GROUP of travellers have broken into a school's playing field.

Sussex Police said they were working with Peter Midwinter, the headteacher of Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Upper Boundstone Lane, Sompting, after 20 caravans parked up on the school's field.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police were advised that travellers had broken into a school field at Sompting shortly after 2pm on Tuesday (May 23).

"Officers are liaising with the headteacher at the Sir Robert Woodward Academy in Upper Boundstone Lane.

"Around 20 caravans have arrived on the field having broken down gates to gain access.

"Students at the school are leaving as scheduled at the end of their working day."

In a statement posted on its website, The Sir Robert Woodard Academy said: "We can confirm that there are members of the traveller community on site, located in a fenced area, away from the main academy buildings.

"All students have left the academy in a calm and orderly fashion.

"The relevant authorities have been contacted and an enforcement order is being issued.

"Police are on site and the matter is being handled in a calm and safe manner."
