The beauty of the sea and countryside and that it has been such a great place to raise a family.

Be more tolerant and a little less ambitious.

What is your most valued possession?

My father’s watch, water stained from Dunkirk in 1940.

What is your biggest regret?

I don’t really have any regrets, life is far too short to bother with that.

What is your biggest fear?

That someone will make me resit my A-levels – still the most scary exams I have ever taken.

What is your proudest achievement?

For the family, the way my two sons have turned out. In career terms, establishing the NSPCC National Child Protection Helpline which subsequently merged with Childline.

Which five people (living or dead) would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

Keith Moon, rock star and hell raiser; Willie John McBride, rugby hero; David Cornwell, aka the author John le Carre; Reena Esmail, composer; Nicky Cambridge, my predecessor at Healthwatch and a Brighton living treasure.

Anything else?

More than 20 years ago we settled our family life in Sussex and it is hard to conceive of living anywhere else.

Over that time I have been fortunate to work with dedicated and friendly people in all parts of the county and in the City of Brighton and Hove.

Over that time have seen our communities becoming more diverse and be all the richer for it. I hope that we can keep this a place where a newcomer can find a welcome, acceptance and fresh opportunities.

I believe local people love and trust the NHS and our local care services.
