A PRIMARY school “deeply affected by funding cuts” has launched a crowdfunder in a desperate bid to replace whiteboards.

The Gattons Infant School, in Burgess Hill, is asking parents and the community to donate money to help replace eight interactive whiteboards.

School bosses made the plea saying Government cuts meant they were too cash-strapped to buy the boards at £2,145 each.

Ellie Bennett, assistant head, wrote on the crowdfunding page: “We have have been deeply affected by Government cuts and as a result we are only just managing to finance the bare minimum in our attempts to continue to provide the children with the rich and exciting curriculum that we do.

“Currently our classes all have very old, outdated interactive whiteboards which our teachers use to deliver the curriculum to the children every day.

“The condition of the screens on our current whitebaords is unacceptable and they are no longer of good enough quality for our children. Work and presentations are becoming increasingly difficult to see.

“We are in urgent need of replacing them in all of our classrooms before they break altogether and we are left with nothing.”

So far the school has raised £795 of the £20,000 target. But school bosses are hoping parents and the community will give what it can to the popular school for children aged five to seven.

Parent Nic Fehrenbach said: “They’re surely should be money for them to be able to purchase these items.

“It’s disappointing as a parent that a school rated outstanding by Ofsted, and which should be getting funding to maintain that level of teaching, is resorting to crowdfunding to get essential equipment.”

The plea comes after more than 700 parents, teachers and pupils from across Brighton and Hove gathered at The Level, Brighton, to take part in a mass protest on Friday.

The event, organised by parent-led campaign Save Our Schools, voiced anger at the £14 million education budget cut many claim is affecting schools in the city.

The Government says school funding is at an all-time high with £40 billion committed nationwide in 2016/17.
