A FUNDRAISING event is to be held in the memory of a mother who died suddenly after the birth of her son.

Laura Newland, 30, of Foredown Road, Portslade, collapsed and died seven weeks after the birth of her son Jaxson last August.

Laura, who also had an older son Callum, had an undiagnosed clot that had been growing undetected during her pregnancy.

She started having breathing difficulties and struggled to walk following Jaxson’s birth.

She promised her mother Marion Cook that she would see a doctor the following day – by which time it was tragically too late.

A post-mortem found a blood clot in her leg had developed during pregnancy and had detached unexpectedly, causing a massive embolism.

Her mother Marion Cook, of Graham Avenue, Portslade, has been caring for the two boys ever since. She said: “Callum wanted to celebrate his mummy’s birthday as we do every year.

“However as so many people loved Laura we were unable to fit everyone into my house. Hence the local pub.”

They hope the event at the Mile Oak Inn in Mile Oak Road, Portslade, on June 23 will allow friends and family to share their memories of Laura.

It is also hoped they will raise enough money to buy a memorial bench.

Laura had been training as a make-up artist and hairdresser at City College Brighton and Hove.

Since her sudden death Marion has stepped in to help the boys as they struggle to come to terms with the death of their mother as well as taking over as both mum and nanny.

Marion’s efforts earned her an Argus Community Stars Award after her qualities as grandparent of the year were recognised.

The memorial event will include family entertainment, a quiz and DJ and will be held on June 23 from 4pm.

Businesses or residents who would like to make a donation to the raffle or otherwise contribute should contact Rachel on 07454 771947.

Following Laura’s death Marion said: “She wanted Jaxson so desperately and she hasn’t had the chance to enjoy him. I find that incredibly sad.”
