EXTRA care should be taken as gusts of up to 60mph batter the south coast.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning to add to that of a yellow warning for wind issued earlier by the Met office.

Gusts of winds have been reported to reach 40 to 50mph today and there are likely to be isolated gusts, close to 60mph possibly over coasts, hills and locally inland where heavy showers occur.

This yellow weather warning is in place until 10pm tonight and people are advised to take extra care when out and about.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service emergency planning officer Glenn Jones said: “As the wind this afternoon is gusting strongly, please be aware localised damage may occur.

“Outdoor furniture, including trampolines, may move if a gust of wind catches the underneath surfaces.

“Please ensure all such furniture is stored in a place of shelter or robustly tethered to the ground so to stop the items taking off and causing unnecessary damage.

“Also, be aware that some trees may be uprooted, or lose branches, in the wind.

“Be mindful of this when walking under trees and also when parking vehicles in the vicinity of wooded areas or tree lined avenues."
