PLANS to bring parking restrictions to Brighton’s last unregulated inner city streets have moved a step closer.

Resident parking schemes for Hanover and Elm Grove and Craven Vale could begin in early October if agreed by the environment, transport and sustainability committee later this month.

A scheme running between Monday to Sunday, 9am to 8pm, in the area south of Elm Grove and streets in the north west section has been drawn up following extensive consultation.

A light touch scheme operating Monday to Friday for 11am to noon and 6pm to 7pm is proposed for other Elm Grove streets. For Craven Vale, residents’ parking will operate Monday to Sunday between 9am and 8pm.

Following concerns from businesses, the council will introduce a pilot allowing firms to buy up to 50 visitor permits a year as well as two business permits if eligible.

Schemes will be reviewed after a year to 18 months of the launch.

Councillor Gill Mitchell, committee chairwoman, said: “The consultations have highlighted the differing views of residents and we have significantly amended the Hanover and Elm Grove scheme to take account of what people have said.”
