MORE CCTV, lighting and larger bins are all being brought in to a city centre park following parents' concerns over community safety.

The new measures to improve safety at The Level will be introduced over the next few weeks following a recent security review, Brighton and Hove City Council has announced.

The move is in addition to improvements already made over the past few months including more motion-sensitive lighting, 24-hour monitored CCTV cameras and reinforced windows installed at the community pavilion.

Parents have complained about persistent incidents of violence and drug use at the park despite its £2.2 million makeover in 2013.

Changes to be brought in include amending two play units to make them more open-sided and allow greater visibility of playground users.

To improve park lighting, central columns near to the park fountains will be raised to provide increased lighting with an additional police CCTV camera attached to the new column.

The additional CCTV will bring the total in operation around the park to 13.

The council has also announced plans to secure funding for a full-time park manager to carry out daily park-wide inspections and maintenance.

Large bins will be installed on the edges of the park to help tackle litter problems.

It follows work already carried out to install new signs on park noticeboards and inside community rooms giving direct contact numbers to report concerns at the park.

City Parks staff will be carrying out litter picks and playground inspections at weekends while there will be increased police visits and patrols with drug dogs.

The council also believes that initiatives to increase public use of the park for longer during the day, including opening the café for seven days a week, increase use of community rooms the varied programme of volunteer-led activities, have helped increase community safety.

Cllr Gill Mitchell, environment, sustainability and transport committee chairwoman, said: “Community safety at The Level is an ongoing issue and council works closely with the police, community groups and park users to identify problems, tackle anti-social behaviour and improve safety.

“We are currently working through the all recommendations in the community safety report with a view to making further improvements over the coming months.”
