PEOPLE have gone mad for outdoor swimming in the glorious sunshine.

Saltdean Lido opened to great fanfare last weekend with about 4,000 swimmers jumping in at the seafront attraction.

Such was the success of the opening weekend, bosses at the Grade II* listed lido are exploring opening during the week to meet demand, though this is being hampered by health and safety rules around ongoing building work.

The pool opens for the next three weekends before opening daily between 7am and 7pm from July 9.

Meanwhile Pells Pool in Lewes is dealing with unprecedented demand for swimming with a dramatic increase in season tickets.

Bosses at the UK’s oldest freshwater outdoor pool have sold 150 more season tickets than ever before in a whole season.

A spokesman said: “We have reluctantly decided that we will have to cap total season ticket sales at 750, the first time we have ever had to place a limit.

“This means that, aside from those already being processed, we cannot issue any more season tickets this year.

“The reason for this is that the pool has a total capacity of only 500 and we do not think it is ethical to keep selling more than one and a half times our capacity.

“We do not think it would be responsible to keep selling them, just to raise more money and risk a worse service for everyone.”
